A beautifully crafted, imaginatively designed staircase can wow people as soon as they cross the threshold. Sweeping and sculptural, twisting and helical, floating and gravity-defying – anything’s possible.

But you don’t need to design from scratch. There’s plenty that can be done to enhance an existing staircase. You could paint the whole thing a bright and cheerful colour, carve a deep channel under the handrail and insert a soft LED, fit a patterned runner – or all three.
